Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA) – which was developed by lead researchers at the University of Canterbury – is delivering real benefits for children in terms of improved literacy achievement outcomes in their early years at schools.
New research shows that for over 29,000 five-year-old children who received the BSLA between February 2020 and May 2023, it has proven more effective in accelerating children’s early literacy skills than other classroom literacy approaches.
Structured literacy is what the Government will be rolling out in state run schools across New Zealand in 2025.
A Better Start National Science Challenge funded the research into this approach and are excited by the change it can make in the lives of young New Zealanders.
